We get a lot of questions about cloth diapering, and how we manage this at our center. We thought we'd share a few of the most common questions with you!
Oh, gross. Isn't cloth diapering way more work? Don't be silly! It's actually far less messy and work than you've imagined it to be. Truly, until your little ones start eating solid foods, its as simple as disposable: toss them in a wet bag when finished, wash, fold, and use again. Really, its that easy. Once you start to introduce solids, just add in the step of rinsing the diapers before they hit the bag, and you're good to go.
But cloth are so expensive! Yes, and no. The average cloth diaper costs between $5 and $15, depending on where you purchase it. Most families have around 25 diapers that last from birth-o-potty training. That's a total investment of around $300 in a lifetime. Alternatively, disposable diapers will run a family around $60/month, or around $2,000 before they are potty trained. The upfront cost of cloth diapering is absolutely more expensive, but over the course of your child's life, you'll see the savings. If you consider having another--just think of the savings when you re-use the cloth on them as well!
That's a lot of laundry. Ok, you've got us on this one. You WILL do more laundry. Usually between 2-3 extra loads a week. There are services that will do that for you, but its not too bad, we swear. Most families find a routine quickly: tossing diapers in to wash in the morning before work, drying during dinnertime and folding before bed. You won't spend a ton on detergent, and most families who cloth from birth-potty trained usually only purchase 2-4 bags of diaper detergent in that span. It lasts quite awhile!
Aside from cost and the environment, are there other benefits? Yes. Yes. Yes! Aside from the cuteness factor, many cloth moms/dads report that their little ones never experienced diaper rashes and they potty trained much quicker than their disposable-diapered friends. We've seen the diaper rash scenario to be true many times over-cloth diaper bottoms rarely get rashes!
How does it work at the center? Great question. All of our teachers are cloth-diaper trained and we'll meet with you to develop a plan that makes sense for you. Most families bring in a stash of diapers at the beginning of each week and take the dirty ones home nightly. We can also arrange for your cloth service to pick up and drop off at the daycare, so its one less thing for you to do!
